Ball Bearing Types, Construction, Features and Applications.
Introduction
The term bearing is a derived from the verb "to wear" as it is a machine elements that allow one path to bear or to support and another.
Through small but is having is used at a very large scale in steel plants. Hence knowledge of wearing becomes very important for us.
In this article we are going to give brief detailing of Ball bearing. And Explaining its types, Construction, features and Applications.

Bearing
Bearing is a component that supports a load while permitting relative motion between two elements of a machine.
A Rolling element bearing carries a load by placing round element between two surfaces. These surfaces are formed by the inner race and the outer race.
The relative motion of the races cause the bearing elements to roll with little or no sliding.
Types of Bearing
● Ball Bearing
● Roller Bearing
There are a wide variety of Rolling contact bearing that use spherical balls or some other type of Roller between the stationary and the moving elements.
Ball Bearing
A Ball Bearing is the type of Bearing in which small balls are used for the separation of two different races (i.e. Inner race and outer race). The purpose of ball Bearing is to provide noise-less or friction-less operations.
Bearing are normally selected based on the requirement to carry a given load for a given period.
Rolling contact bearing are designed to carry pure radial loads, pure axial load or a combination of the two.
Types of Ball Bearing
Types of Ball Bearing |
1. Deep Groove Ball Bearing
2. Angular Contact Ball Bearing
3. Self Aligning Ball Bearing
Deep Groove Ball Bearing
● Construction:
Deep Groove Ball Bearing |
Deep groove ball bearing has both inner and Outer race, it has ball as a rolling elements and consists of a retainer or cage.
The inner race, Outer race and the balls are made up of SAE521000 material and the cage is made up of Steel sheet, brass sheet or plastic.
● Features
1. Support small and medium loads. because ball have a less support area to offer.
2. Support both radial and moderate thrust load in the both direction. because both inner and Outer races of a deep groove ball bearing can have a relative Movement axially, In either direction by the amount of axial clearance.
This creates an nominal contact angle which is responsible for this bearing to take a moderate thrust load with the radial load. Axial load carrying capacity of deep groove ball bearing depend on internal clearance.
3. Suitable for high speed application
Low centrifugal stress because of smaller weight of balls and operating temperature due to low coefficient of friction.
4. High running accuracy
Manufactured with high Precision.
5. Low friction and less noise.
Less friction because of the point contact and less noise because of certain preloading during operation.
6. Less tolerant of misalignment of the inner and Outer race.
This is because of the balls between races that make angular moment of inner race inside outer is impossible.
(Angular moment of inner race inside outer race is impossible).
7. Axial displacement is not possible.
Can not be used as a floating end bearing, with interference fit at both in a race with shaft as well as outer race with housing.
Since, Balls can not move in grooves in axial direction beyond axial clearance, thus axial displacement is not possible in groove ball bearing.
● Application
Deep groove ball bearing are produced in bulk and have a low-cost. Hence, They are first choice of bearing for any application, If otherwise suitable. Deep groove ball bearing are used in following areas.
○ Small and medium-size motor's, electric fans etc.
○ Motorcycle other light duty automobiles.
○ Conveyor's and other light duty loaded gear boxes.
○ Light load machine tool
○ and Small or medium size pumps.
Angular contact ball bearing
● Construction
Angular Contact Ball Bearing |
1. Angular contact ball bearing are constructed with axially asymmetric recess.
2. It has a higher axial thrust with radial load.
3. Also, the nominal contact angle is kept hire of around 40 degree.
● Features
1. It takes radial load with higher load.
2. It may be used in pairs in o, that is back to back arrangement; ×, that is face to face arrangement and tandem arrangements.
3. It has a high running accuracy.
4. It has low friction.
5. It ruins quietly.
6. It is suitable for high speed.
7 Axial displacement is not possible in it.
8. It does not compensate for misalignment.
● Application
Angular contact bearing are used at any place, like:
○ Automobiles final drive
○ Machine tool spindle drive
○ Centrifugal pumps.
○ Small worm and worm wheels.
○ Screw Jack.
○ Bicycle headset and dentistry tools.
Self Aligning Ball Bearing
● Construction
Self Aligning Ball Bearing |
1. Self-aligning ball bearing has two rows of balls and common concave spherical raceway in the outer ring.
2. The centre of outer ring curvature made that of the bearing itself, So that the inner ring, balls and cage are free to rotate.
3. The self-aligning ball bearing with the tapered bore can easily be fit to the shaft with an adapter assembly.
● Features
1. It compensate for angular misalignment in operation up to 2.5 degree.
2. It compensates for initial errors of alignment.
3. It run's quietly with low friction.
4. it is suitable for high speed and high running accuracy.
5. It can not take moment load.
6. The axial displacement is not possible in self aligning ball bearing.
● Applications
Because of so many future, self-aligning ball bearing have various applications.
○ Agriculture machineries
○ Conveyors
○ Wood-working machines
○ Fans
○ Roll Shafts
So, these are the types of Ball Bearing - Deep groove, Angular contact and Self aligning ball bearing; and there Construction, Features and Applications. Hopefully, these Information might help you to gain knowledge about Ball Bearing.
